Protective Styles Are Supposed to Protect Your Hair. So Why Is It Still Breaking?
Let's talk about something I see far too often.
You take down your box braids and get a sew-in. Then you switch to crochet braids, faux locs, kinky twists, and right back to another style.
But when are you giving your natural hair the attention it needs?
In this video, I'm talking about what can happen when we keep switching protective styles without properly caring for the hair and scalp underneath.
Protective styling isn't the problem by itself. It's the tension, repeated manipulation, neglected moisture needs, and sometimes leaving styles in longer than your hair can tolerate.
And yes, this conversation includes locs and microlocs too.
Now I want to hear from you.
Have you ever taken down a protective style and noticed more breakage, thinning around your edges, or hair that felt extremely dry?
Or have protective styles actually helped your hair thrive?
I'm especially curious about something: Do you give your hair a break between styles, or do you go straight into the next one?
Share your experience below. No judgment here. I want us to talk about what works, what doesn't, and what we've learned along the way.
